Program Description
Jess Hoeme of Joseph, Hollander & Craft was the lead trial attorney defending Wellington, KS resident Ashley Pearson, who had been charged with second-degree murder for fatally stabbing her boyfriend in 2018. The case was dismissed during a “stand your ground” hearing in August of 2023 after the defense proved Pearson had been abused by her boyfriend for a long time and wielded the knife to protect her toddler from his abuse.
The trial drew significant national interest, being live-streamed on COURT TV and becoming the subject of an episode of A&E Network’s crime docuseries, “Accused: Guilty or Innocent.” The episode, featuring behind-the-scenes coverage of Jess and his client, aired on May 2, 2024 and became the most-watched episode in the series’ six-season history.
Join us for a 1-hour CLE webinar on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 for a riveting conversation with Mr. Hoeme and KU Law Professor Mike Hoeflich on the ethics of trial publicity, covering the rules of professional conduct that Jess and the firm had to observe during the filming, production, and promotion of the documentary. The CLE will cover applicable rules including trial publicity and confidentiality.
