March 30th eighty-five years ago marked the commemoration of the inaugural annual celebration of National Doctor’s Day. While there are regulatory agencies such as the Kansas Board of Healing arts that help ensure the availability of quality medicine, it should not be taken for granted. National Doctor’s Day is a time to recognize the dedication and sacrifices doctors around the nation make each and every day in the interest of patient care. Historically, it was accepted practice for patients to send their treating physicians a thank you card and a red carnation which symbolizes the day. In more recent times, celebration of the national day has been left to healthcare organizations. Just last year, the change was made to adopt the week of March 30th as National Doctor’s week to draw greater attention and emphasis to the profession. Physicians today arguably have higher than ever stressors and pressures in the healthcare arena.
