Refugee Hiep Le Spared Deportation Thanks to Pardon by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced yesterday that she would grant clemency to eight of the over 200 individuals who were seeking it — five commutations and three pardons.
Mr. Hiep Xuan Le (aka Xuan Hiep Le) was among the chosen eight. Mr. Le came to the U.S. nearly 40 years ago as a refugee and has been out of prison for over 20 years. Despite having served his sentence, raised a family, and built successful businesses, Mr. Le’s criminal past rendered him subject to deportation. Only a full and unconditional pardon from Gov. Kelly would ensure that he could remain in the U.S. with his wife and son.

Upon hearing the news of his pardon, Mr. Le told them he jumped and cried with joy: “All the years of fearing deportation and being sent far away from my loved ones is being replaced with happiness and assurance that I can be here for my family,” he said. “All [of this is] thanks to your hard work and caring.”
