Program Description
Implementation of AI technologies for the client experience is becoming increasingly more common as lawyers and firms strive to attain increased efficiency and lower costs. The presenters will explore the ethical considerations of specific use cases for AI in the practice of law, to include virtual legal assistants and automation of tasks for managing the client relationship. While generative AI and its uses are rapidly developing, ethical implications are becoming clear. The presenters will discuss how attorneys can balance innovation and integrity.

About the Presenters
Dr. Michael H. Hoeflich | Distinguished Professor of Law, The University of Kansas School of Law
Michael Hoeflich holds degrees from Haverford College, Cambridge University, and Yale Law School. He taught at the University of Illinois from 1980–1988, was dean of the Syracuse University College of Law from 1988-1994, and was dean at the University of Kansas School of Law from 1994–2000. Hoeflich is the author or editor of more than 25 books and 149 articles. He previously served as the director of the M.S. in Homeland Security: Law & Policy degree program at KU Law. He is the principal investigator on a five-year, $1.5 million Intelligence Community Centers for Academic Excellence grant to the University of Kansas. In 2021, Hoeflich was the recipient of a Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Achievement Award, the state higher education system’s most prestigious recognition for scholarly excellence. Hoeflich received the Balfour Jeffrey Award in Humanities & Social Sciences for his significant research contributions to legal history and ethics.
Amanda G. Voth | Deputy Disciplinary Administrator, Office of the Disciplinary Administrator
Amanda Voth joined the Office of the Disciplinary Administrator in March 2022 following a long career as a criminal prosecutor. After graduating from the University of Kansas School of Law, Amanda became an Assistant District Attorney in Reno County, Kansas, where she prosecuted financial crimes and drug crimes, before joining the Kansas Attorney General’s Office. Amanda worked at the AG’s Office for seven years, prosecuting Medicaid Fraud cases and major crimes such as homicides and child sex cases, before moving to the Solicitor’s Unit where she wrote briefs and argued cases in front of the appellate courts on behalf of the State of Kansas. Amanda also served as the AG’s Office’s legislative liaison for all criminal issues, where she wrote testimony and testified on proposed legislation. Amanda continued her prosecution career when she moved back to her hometown and took a job as Chief Deputy County Attorney in McPherson County, Kansas. Amanda also served on the editorial board for The Kansas Prosecutor magazine for many years. In her current role as Deputy Disciplinary Administrator, Amanda enjoys helping members of the profession, while also protecting the public’s interest. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, photography, and organizing community events.
