Divorce During a Pandemic: One of Many Impacts in 2020

Published: 20 November 2020 | 12:24PM

There comes a time in many relationships where maintaining the partnership is no longer feasible. For married couples, this often results in divorce.

According to many sources, interest in divorce has increased by 34% during the pandemic. For many states, this increase was reported approximately three weeks after lockdown orders were implemented. If you find yourself in this situation, you are not alone.

To say that 2020 has been a long, unpredictable year would be an understatement. We are living through times of uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. In fact, on July 1, 2020, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an article detailing the impact the pandemic could have on individuals (even those who never contract COVID-19). Those impacts include:  changes in sleep or eating patterns; difficulty sleeping or concentrating; worsening of chronic health and mental health problems; fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones; and your financial situation or job, or loss of support services you rely on.

These pandemic impacts coupled with being stuck in the house, homeschooling children and working from home could put a strain on any relationship– even more so for those already struggling. For some, being home all the time has eliminated access to their support systems and stress relievers like spending time with extended family and friends, going to the gym, or just having time alone. For others, being home has given them the opportunity to reflect on relationship issues, leaving them questioning what their options are.

Choosing to end a marriage is rarely an easy decision. However, it is often the first step in achieving a healthier and happier future.
