Ms. Scherff has extensive experience litigating felony jury trials in both federal and state courts. She is one of only a handful of Kansas lawyers qualified by Kansas to handle death penalty cases, and is one of only two lawyers in Kansas’ history of death penalty cases to get a capital case dismissed. She represents individuals in all types of criminal cases, including first degree murder, bank robbery, drug distribution, mortgage fraud, aggravated kidnapping, rape, aggravated indecent liberties, aggravated battery, stalking, electronic solicitation, DUI and juvenile matters.

Ms. Scherff is licensed to practice in all courts in Kansas and Missouri, as well as in the following federal courts: United States District Court for the District of Kansas; the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri; the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit; the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; and the United States Supreme Court.After graduating from law school in 2000, Mr. Joseph was admitted to practice before the Kansas Supreme Court, all other Kansas courts, and the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. In 2001, he was admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He was admitted to practice in the Western District of Missouri in 2005 and the United States Supreme Court in 2017.

Ms. Scherff received her juris doctorate in 1991 from the University Of Kansas School Of Law. She has served as an Adjunct Professor and taught Trial Advocacy at the University Of Kansas School Of Law since 2003. She earned her B.A. in Political Science at the University of Kansas in 1989.

After graduating from law school in 1991, Ms. Scherff worked as an attorney for Wyandotte-Leavenworth Legal Services doing a general civil practice. In 1993, Ms. Scherff moved to the area of criminal law as a prosecutor in Wyandotte County. She worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Wyandotte County, and later as an Assistant District Attorney for Johnson County. As a prosecutor, she specialized in sex and child abuse cases. In 2003, Ms. Scherff entered into private practice as criminal defense attorney with Cornwell, Erickson, Travis and Scherff. In 2010 Ms. Scherff and Ms. Lindsey Erickson launched Erickson Scherff LLC, a criminal defense practice representing clients throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Since then, Ms. Scherff has worked in multiple jurisdictions in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Texas to litigate federal and state cases. Erickson Scherff LLC merged with Joseph, Hollander & Craft LLC in 2016.

Ms. Scherff is a member of the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is a Master of the American Inns of Court, Earl E. O’Connor Chapter. She also serves on the Kansas Department of Corrections Juvenile Review Board. Active not only in the bar, Ms. Scherff also is an active member of Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri; Gamma Phi Beta Alumni Association; the American Red Cross; the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City; and the National Association of Professional Women.

Ms. Scherff is a member of American Bar Association; Kansas Bar Association; Kansas City Metro Bar Association; Wyandotte County Bar Association; and the Johnson County Bar Association.

Ms. Scherff has earned Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory’s “Distinguished” rating for lawyers. She was named one of the Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers in 2017.
